Here we go again with a noble cause, but the people behind it are doing things in a stupid way. There’s a bunch of people who are concerned about homelessness and native rights. So, because they feel that the Olympic Games have increased the homelessness problem in Vancouver, and they say the land used for the games is under dispute as to who owns it, and Royal Bank sponsored a bunch of Olympic stuff, they thought the way to get their point across was to firebomb an Ottawa branch of Royal bank and post a video of their actions. It’s an avi file that can be found at the above link, and here as well.
Well, at least they weren’t puncturing the tires of random construction trucks. Even though their actions will change no minds, there was somewhat of a connection.
I really have nothing to say, except what the hell do they think this is going to accomplish? Making threats like
On June 25-27 2010, the G8/G20 ‘leaders’ and bankers are meeting in Huntsville and Toronto to make decisions that will further their policies of exploitation of people and the environment. We will be there.
will only serve to lengthen their list of charges when they are tracked down. When you say that below a video of a burning bank, that can only be taken as a threat.
And what the fuck does this even mean?
We pass the torch to all those who would resist the trampling of native rights, of the rights of us all, and resist the ongoing destruction of our planet. We say: The Fire This Time.
I understand that you can only say so many words, that some action has to happen sometimes, but this is the wrong kind of action. If you don’t like Royal Bank’s practices, don’t bank there, and advocate that others not bank there. Don’t blow up a building. You forget that firefighters had to be dispatched to deal with the consequences. What if they were needed elsewhere? Do you want to take responsibility for the possible deaths of people who needed help and couldn’t get it because fire personnel were busy putting out your fire? Those people didn’t send money to the Olympic games. Why should they suffer too? Oh…you didn’t think of that? Well, think next time. While you’re busy trying to save the planet, think of your neighbour as well.
