John McDonald is probably my favourite Blue Jay. He doesn’t get to play much, but when he does it’s always a treat to watch him. He’s not really known for his hitting, but as a big play making shortstop he’s one of the best in the game.
Johnny Mac lost his father Jack to liver cancer last week, just a few days before Father’s Day. Father’s Day, as it happened, was one of the all too few times lately that John was called into a game. Before Jack died, the 2 of them had a conversation about baseball and the fact that John doesn’t hit all that many home runs. Jack told him to “hit your next one for me”, and on Father’s Day in the bottom of the 9th inning of a game against the Giants, he got his chance. What happened next is one of those things that you would swear came right out of a movie.
Unfortunately the Jays lost the game, but hitting a 2-run homer for your dad on Father’s Day and continuing to live the dream he helped you so much with is a lot more important anyway.
We love ya, Johnny Mac.
