It’s been a while since I’ve presented a song for your…enjoyment? Mockery? Ridicule? Scorn? Whatever it’s for, have this.
PS I Love You is a name I’ve heard a lot lately, but for one reason or another I haven’t gotten around to checking them out. Well, until today when somebody tweeted a link to a cover they did of Subdivisions, that is. And yes, it’s that Subdivisions.
The write-up on it sounded promising. A lot of the synths were dropped in favour of harder edged guitars to make the song louder and change the feel of it but not too much, I was essentially told. One of the guys in the band also called it a “shaky at best interpretation of a masterpiece,” so I knew I wasn’t about to listen to a group that’s completely full of itself trying to reinvent the wheel. There’s a time and a place for that, and it’s nice when a band knows when and where it is.
With the reading out of the way, it was time for the listening to start. That reminds me, I should probably let you hear it.
I’m not sure how to describe what I’m hearing. At first it was exactly what I had pictured. It’s loud and there are lots of guitars. The playing is fine, but certainly not Rush. Really though, not much is. No complaints, I thought. this has potential.
And then I heard it.
Seriously, what is that sound? Is he doing that with his voice on purpose or should we get him to a hospital? Honestly, is he ok? I think he may be having a seizure of some sort. It’s either that or somebody is violently tickling what you’d get if you crossed a 1980’s British new wave singer with Emo Philips. that must be what it is, because the band is still playing like nothing’s wrong with him. They seem to be in no real hurry to help. Does he always sound like that? It’s quite distracting. How do they pay attention? You must just get used to that after a while. That has to be it. I know if it was me I’d be fucking up every take because I wouldn’t be able to concentrate on anything but him.
By the time the song ended, all I could think was yeah, the word shaky sure was appropriate, my friend. Good call there.
As I’ve done before when first hearing a band I don’t know covering a classic song and not doing so well, I’ll find something else they’ve done and see if it’s more to my liking.
by way of YouTube, here’s a little number called ‘Get Over’.
First things first, please tell me that the actual mix doesn’t sound like that. I get the distortion idea, but this isn’t working. It sounds like I’m listening through a blown speaker or a radio with nearly dead batteries.
Baaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh! He’s still doing that! It’s not quite to the degree of Subdivisions, but I can’t handle it. It’s irritating. Completely takes me out of the song.
You kind of let me down on this one, internet.
pS. I have no snarky PS type line to end this with, but I feel like there should be one. I guess this will have to do. I’m sorry for not doing better. I’m just a tad preoccupied by something. How is nobody else in earshot of that guy preoccupied by the same thing? Gaaarg, he’s giving me the shivers now. Must stop.
