January 19th was the first ever Gun Appreciation Day in America. Yes, Gun Appreciation Day is exactly what it sounds like. Right wing groups getting together to organize a celebration of firearms in response to the renewed push for gun control laws.
I don’t want to go off on a big gun control rant or anything, but I will say this. Not all guns are bad, and there are most certainly responsible gun owners. But if you aren’t in the military yet you require the type of gun that will let you fire a gazillion rounds in a few seconds, you’re either a profoundly terrible marksman or you have a profoundly small penis for which you feel the need to overcompensate. Certain types of guns there are just no good reasons for, and you definitely shouldn’t be able to get your hands on one by simply walking into your local WalMart and tossing one onto the counter next to the milk.
But back to Gun Appreciation Day.
Things didn’t exactly go smoothly. Depending on which side of the fence you fall on, you’re either not surprised at all or you’d prefer we didn’t bring it up. I’m not firmly with either side, but I’m going to go ahead and bring it up anyway because this is kind of funny.
Three people were injured at the Dixie Gun and Knife Show in Raleigh, North Carolina when a gun being taken out of its case by its owner went off, shooting them at of all places, a security checkpoint. One of the victims has already been released from hospital and the others are said to be in good condition.
Meanwhile, in Medina, Ohio, a man was shot by a gun dealer who was inspecting a semi-automatic he had just bought at the county gun show. The magazine had been removed but there was a round left in the chamber, which doesn’t end well when you somehow slip and pull the trigger. the victim was taken to hospital by helicopter. His condition is unknown. According to the report, the shooter and the shootee are longtime friends. I’m interested in finding out if are has since become were.
But wait, there’s more!
In Indiana, a man was loading a .45 semi-automatic as he walked to his car after taking part in some gun show festivities when he accidentally shot himself in the hand. He was taken to hospital for treatment and will likely be ok.
This last bit isn’t funny, but it sure makes an interesting case for something. a List of People Injured or Killed by Guns on ‘Gun Appreciation Day’
Clearly, what America needs is more guns.
