Maybe He’s Not Really Dead. He Might Be Playing Possum

Just heard the news that George Jones has died. He was 81. Considering some of the stories that have come out about him over the years, that’s kind of impressive.

Even when I was a little kid who didn’t care much at all for country music, I had to admit that I liked George. If for no other reason, White Lightning. You can’t listen to that song and not have fun. It’s impossible. Between the music, the words and that noise, you just can’t do it.

I also liked this one. I wish I could remember who it was who always used to sing the chorus and get it stuck in my head.

As I got older and smarter, of course I grew to enjoy a lot more of his music. But of all of it, the Grand Tour always sticks out the most. What an amazing, heartbreaking song.

Whatever your favourite is, now might be a good time to crank it up and remember one of the best.

Goodbye, George.

  1. White Lightning was the very first, as in ever, George Jones song I ever heard. I think I might have been like 6. It still gets in my head and kinda hangs out there.

  2. I thought he’d go on forever. I was a country music fan (among other types of music) for years. I posted my son’s favorite “He Stopped Loving Her Today” (tearjerker) on my FB page My favorites were the duets with Tammy although I’d listen to anything he sang.

    1. He had so many great songs that it’s hard to list them all.

Apparently he was just getting ready to head out on his retirement tour. Very sad.
