I don’t know how long this Conservative ad has been around, but I hadn’t seen it until the last couple days. Boy, it’s something else.
There are a couple of ways to look at this.
1. “Stephen Harper isn’t perfect.” Well, who is, right? That little bit of honesty is kind of refreshing, in a way. A nice change from the Hooray for me!” and “My opponent is an incompetent who will destroy all that we hold dear!” messages we’re constantly bombarded with. Good on Harper for humanizing himself.
2. Or there’s the way I look at it.
Seriously, watch that thing. That music…those people. It’s so weird. It’s as though desperation, panic, misery and resignation all got together to strangle the shit out of hope.
“Well…that guy’s an idiot…that guy can’t do math…dear god, what are we gonna do!”
“Well, there’s always Harper again…I guess.”
“Yeah. He’s different terrible. You know, like my old crappy car. I think I can get one more year out of it. It’s still sort of comfortable, the heat works most days and it only stalls now and then.”
“Know what you mean. I’m voting Harper. Of all the turds we can polish, he’ll be the easiest to shine.”
And correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the “I’m not perfect” angle the same one Rob Ford took after the crack scandal finally exploded? Yes. Yes it was.
