Dallas company Baby Alert International has started selling a device they say will make it easier for busy parents to remember not to leave their children in sweltering cars.
The unit, marketed as the
Child Minder System,
is necessary because “All of our lives are so busy,” and “we get distracted and we forget something.” It also seems that leaving little Junior to stew in his own juices while we run into the Wal-Mart for a few hours is “just as simple as forgetting to buy milk at the grocery store,” at least according to Jocelyn Spears, a company representative.
Using this miraculous piece of technology is as easy as 1 2 3, as long as you remember to set it up of course.
With the Child Minder System a smart pad and controller box is placed in the child’s car seat.
The child’s weight activates the system then and if the parent turns off the car and walks away the key ring alarm unit alerts the parents the child is still inside.
“It’s just a constant beep like a truck backing up,” Spears said.
Not sure if I’d trust the safety of my darlings to a person who doesn’t know that the beeping of a truck isn’t constant, but whatever.
And where the heck are they finding these parents?
“As a mom you can get really distracted, especially when you have multiple children and something like this would be very helpful as a back up plan if you are scatter brained that day,” said Cate Kenny, an area mother who likely has a Children’s Aid investigation in her future.
A sane human being who could point out that this thing is ridiculous was not available to be interviewed for this story.
