Not the worst idea in the world: Belfair, Washington’s water districthas started padlocking fire hydrants to prevent water thefts.
Most definitely a bad idea: Belfair, Washington’s water district didn’t bother telling the folks down at the fire department that they had started padlocking fire hydrants to prevent water thefts.
Let’s make a big fail cake with fail icing on top: Belfair, Washington Water District Manager Dave Tipton doesn’t see what all the fuss is about.
Tipton said he doesn’t understand the complaints.
“We’re trying to protect our resource,” said Tipton, who added he’s been “driving around at night trying to catch somebody” stealing water, but that the district doesn’t have the money to buy cameras or to conduct “sting operations.”
But when life gives you other people’s fail, you make failade. The fire department has gone out and bought some extra bolt cutters that they can use to cut the locks off of the secured hydrants when they need to.
I hope they send the bill directly to Tipton and company. The water district may not have money to track down water thieves, but it’s still a lot less expensive than digging up the cash to pay for the lawsuit the first time somebody’s house burns down because the firefighters couldn’t get at the water quickly enough.
